Hello, I’m Emily-Rose, I’m 16 years old and am currently studying in the first year at The Royal Ballet Upper School! I have been doing ballet for around 14 years now and have always had a passion for elegant dance wear and this is what led me to Freda Silk ❤️

FS: You’ve just moved to the Upper School – did you have to re-audition?

E-R H: Yes but it was a private audition just for the White Lodge Year 11s!

Do you learn choreography at school? Do you enjoy it, or prefer to dance other people’s steps?

Yes, previously I have worked with Liam Scarlett and have learnt choreography from my peers for our annual choreographic competition. Although I have choreographed before, I definitely enjoy dancing other people’s choreography more!

As a Royal Ballet School student, do you ever get to perform on the stage at Covent Garden in any of the Royal Ballet shows?

Yes!! Every year we perform our ‘end of year’ show at the Royal Opera House. However I have been very fortunate and have been in the Royal Ballet's Prince of the Pagodas, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. In Swan Lake I was a swan and one of the two little girls. Swan Lake was an incredible opportunity, and as an extra myself and a friend got interviewed by Darcey Bussell in the live cinema relay !

Is performance a big part of your studies, or at the moment is it mostly building technique?

Definitely! The most important part!

Do you feel that as well as technical ability, it is also essential for a dancer to understand music and have a certain degree of acting skill?

Definitely, the music is the most important thing for me when I am dancing and without acting you are not a complete dancer as most ballets are based on stories which need to be told through your acting skills as a performer.

Do you find that putting on a costume changes the way you feel and perform - as opposed to studio wear?

Yes completely!

Is clothing important? If you have a beautiful flowing rehearsal skirt, does it help with the feeling of fluidity and movement when you’re dancing?

Yes, it makes me feel better when dancing!

I’m not a dancer, but I love the elegance and grace of the clothes worn by ballet dancers. Do you take it for granted now, or do you get excited about a new ballet skirt, or new pointe shoes?

Of course! New items are the best, I get so excited when I receive something new !!

Who is your ballet idol?

Marianela Nuñez is my biggest inspiration. Not only is she an incredible dancer but such a nice, humble person as well.

With which company would you like to work in the future?

The Royal Ballet.
